Note on heating/cooling:  During the 8 years I lived in this house, the temperatures outside ranged from about 58 deg F to 85 deg F.  As in most homes in HI, there is no central heating system, for obvious reasons.  Likewise there is no central cooling system.  My choice of cooling was that of using the prevailing NE breezes of 10-15 mph that are so very refreshing.  Just keep the screened windows open.  And use ceiling fans or portable fans, if needed.  Some people use wall unit A/C, these exist in this house, but in 8 years, I never felt the need for turning any on.  The living room has a fireplace that I used a few times, ample supplies of wood found in the yard.  So, heating and cooling expenses are basically zilch.

Note on water supply:  My house has a 10,000 gal catchment tank that I used constantly.  As mentioned above, the water system uses two stages of filtration plus a uv treatment of ALL the water drawn from the tank.  Catchment tank use is very common on the Big Island.  Rain water is so abundant and the water is excellent to drink and use for cleaning purposes.  I never heard of anyone who incurred a health problem from drinking catchment water.  Some people choose to use carboys of distilled water for drinking and cooking purposes.  And some choose to have well water trucked into their holding tanks.  Mostly, I saw that as a perceived need rather than a real need.  I loved the soft water that was drinkable from each and every water tap.

Note on fruit trees:  I have nearly every kind of fruit tree that grows in HI.  And an abundance of avocados, whose season starts in Sep and lasts until after the start of the new year.  Many varieties of avocados- huge, buttery, extremely abundant and delicious.  Also there are many pineapple plants and yummy liliko'i (passion fruit).  And bananas galore.  Fruit trees the likes of which you likely have never heard, and are so delicious and exotic.  See my pdf file found on the LOTS/YARD page.

Hot Pond!!!  Fifteen minutes away from my place is a volcanically heated hot pond the size of a football field.  Temps around 90 deg F.  Surrounded by palm trees, connected to ocean by small channel.  Float in the moonlight. . .  Locals love it, tourists rarely know about it.  And not far from it are tide pools that are fun to snorkel- coral, colorful fish.
